What are Impacted Wisdom Teeth?

Impacted wisdom teeth are third molars that are either inadequately developed or improperly erupted. When wisdom teeth cannot grow in the mouth properly, they can trap bacteria and food around them, causing severe problems. Impacted wisdom teeth can lead to infections and can cause other teeth in the mouth to shift.  Evaluating wisdom teeth is an important part of regular dental checkups.
 

Symptoms of Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Possible symptoms of impacted wisdom teeth include pain and swelling of the gum line and lower face, shifting teeth, and bad taste or odor near the back of the mouth. An infection can develop if the impacted teeth are not treated, which will intensify the pain. Regular appointments with a dentist will identify problems with wisdom teeth before they become significant.
